It’s been 36 hours in this foreign land which becomes less foreign and more welcoming every minute. As we walk around in pure amazement at the fact that nobody in our lives have told us to come here ( including a close Romanian friend in San Diego cough cough Doru), how in the world could we have not heard of Bucharest being such a beautiful and fun place.
Yesterday we did our traditional miles and miles of city hike, to get a feel of neighborhoods and daily life. What really struck us were the grand boulevards, exceptional pedestrian and bike walkways, spectacular parks, massive rotaries, and stunning architecture mixed with some ugly communist block buildings sprinkled in. But unlike other old Eastern Bloc and communist cities, there seems to be less dominance of the ugly density we see elsewhere. The funny thing is the best aspect of communism, with city planning of outdoor spaces, actually amplify the beauty of the city.
Everywhere we went in the city, there was restoration going on in full swing. My guess is over the next few years it will keep improving. I will say their national airline, Tarom, sucks. Waiting to get our luggage from a small plane, actually took longer than the flight. So if you visit, pick any number of Euro airlines that serve this metropolis.
